Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Cinema, as one of the most powerful means of cultural transmission and expression of ideas, can reflect certain aspects of social norms. Violence is one of the most important issues in human societies that exists in overt and hidden forms. One of the important types of hidden violence is verbal violence. Women are one of the main victims of verbal violence. The power imbalance as well as the existence of certain social norms lead to this violence against women. The aim of this study is to investigate patterns of impoliteness which aim to destroy the positive and negative face of people within the framework of Culpepper"s Impoliteness.
METHODOLOGY: This research employs a purposive and nonrandom sampling method. The statistical population consists of all feature-length narrative films produced in Iranian cinema of the19هشتاد’s and 19نود’s. To narrow the scope, four social realist films representing cultural, social, and linguistic changes in Iranian cinema were selected and analyzed within the framework of Culpepper"s Impoliteness Theory. The themes of lies, economic problems, divorce, child custody, abortion, right to work and social context were recognized as central themes reflecting violence against women in them.
FINDINGS: The findings reveal that among the five patterns of verbal impoliteness, positive and negative impoliteness were the most prevalent, with positive impoliteness mainly targeting middle-class women, and negative impoliteness directed at lower-class women.
CONCLUSION: In these films, women attempt in various ways to represent and assert their identities. The results of the study can be beneficial for research in social sciences, linguistics, pragmatics, media policy-making, and film criticism.
